Zanzibar Island known as the Spice Island is part of an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, 25–50 kilometers (16–31 mi) off the coast of the African mainland, and consists of several small islands and two large ones: Unguja (the main island, known as Zanzibar) and Pemba. The capital is Stone Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Visits to the plantations of cloves, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon and other spices that have made the island so famous are popular.

Zanzibar's coastline offers some of the best beaches in the world, with an east coast where waves crash over coral reefs and sandbanks. And the north coast, with softer white sand beaches with stunning sunsets.

On the south coast of Zanzibar is the Menai Bay Conservation Area, a protection area for sea turtles that come every year to lay their eggs on these island beaches. Another attraction of the island is the Jozani Forest, the largest mangrove forest in Zanzibar and the only remaining sanctuary in the world for the Red Colobus primates.
